ADF Classes

Welcome to the Anomaly Data File Classes Guide!!!

ADF Classes let the reader know what to expect from an article before anything else. They determine what kind of anomaly you will write about. In short, they are important. This page will give a thorough explanation of both the Danger Classes and Obscurity Classes.

It will also be using the apple example1 for every class.

Danger Classes

The Danger Classes indicate how dangerous your anomaly is. There are 5 commonly used Danger Classes. Below is an explanation of each class, starting from least to most dangerous. Please keep in mind that a high Danger Class doesn't mean a high Obscurity Class.

Limen

The anomaly is completely harmless and safe to interact with. It does not require any further attention and can be left alone without any consequences. This does not mean the anomaly is low in obscurity. It can be the most overly complicated random bullshit and still be completely harmless.

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. It can be safely consumed, and the screaming stops as soon as the apple is neutralized.

Gula

The anomaly poses some risks and can easily harm anyone directly interacting with it, but not on a grand scale. It does not require immediate attention, but shouldn't be approached just in case. There is a chance the ADR Team will collect it if it actively causes harm.

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. If consumed, the subject will develop acute appendicitis at exactly midnight after consuming the anomaly. The screaming stops as soon as the apple is neutralized.

Ira

The anomaly, even if not sentient, will actively have harmful properties, but not on a grand scale. This class is most commonly used when writing about humanoid or animalistic anomalies. This requires some attention if it is disrupting the peace in a group or community, and the ADR team is likely to attempt to collect it.

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. Any subject hearing the scream will experience an irresistible urge to locate the apple and consume it. Upon consumption, the subject will develop acute appendicitis at exactly midnight. The apple will continue to produce screams until it is completely consumed or neutralized.

Haeresis

The anomaly is easily able to cause harm on a grand scale but can be dealt with in some way to prevent it. It requires immediate attention and it will be collected by the ADR Team in order to suppress it and keep the peace. Anomalies in this class don't need to have the intention to harm, they simply need to have the ability to do so.

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. The scream is able to be heard in a 5km radius. Any person or animal hearing the scream will develop acute appendicitis after 24 hours. If left untreated, the appendix will rupture, causing sepsis and death in most cases. Consuming the apple causes the same effects as hearing it scream. The apple will continue to produce screams until it is completely consumed or neutralized.

Perfidia

The anomaly can cause damage that can affect the entire planet, leading to apocalyptic scenarios and even the death of all life as we know it. This requires immediate containment, and the ADR Team will try anything to stop it as soon as possible. If using this class for your anomaly, try to make it interesting, and not just say "This is something that kills everything".

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. The scream is able to be heard in a 5km radius. Any person or animal hearing the scream will have their appendix burst after 24 hours. As the subject's appendix bursts, they will produce the same scream the apple produced, with the same anomalous properties, causing anyone hearing it to be affected the same as the original subject. Consuming the apple will cause the same effects as hearing it scream. This can start a chain reaction causing a massive amount of deaths if not dealt with immediately. The apple will continue to produce screams until it is completely consumed or neutralized.

Utile

The anomaly is directly helpful to humanity, or ADR, in some way. Either by providing some form of protection, nurture, or any action resulting in a clearly positive outcome. It will usually not require collection and will be protected by ADR in most cases. Utile class anomalies are considered either completely safe or of very little danger and can be left alone. This does not mean the anomaly is low in obscurity; it can still be very complex.

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. This scream will remove all anomalous properties from any anomalous phenomena apart from itself within a 1km radius. The effects will subside after 24 hours.

Obscurity Classes

This is a bit more unique. The Obscurity Class indicates the level of weirdness the anomaly has. The more complicated and obscure the anomaly is, the higher the Obscurity Class. There are 5 commonly used Obscurity Classes. Below is an explanation of each class, starting from least to most obscure. Please keep in mind that a high Obscurity Class doesn't mean a high Danger Class.

Tetra

The anomaly is anomalous but is very straightforward. This means that it does something strange and doesn't require much thought to figure out what it does. For example, a jackalope (bunny with antlers) is perfect for this class. It's definitely an anomaly, but there's no added anomalous effects it has. It's just a cute little bunny with antlers.

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. The scream has no known source.

Hexa

The anomaly is somewhat complicated. There isn't really much to say about this class. It can be a bit confusing at first sometimes.

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. The scream has no known source. Once the apple screams it begins levitating for about 2 hours before dropping to the ground.

Octa

The anomaly is complicated. There's no doubt about it. Most of the time, anomalies in this class will be something that does something that is completely unrelated to it and is difficult to explain.

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. The scream has no known source. Once the apple screams it begins levitating for about 2 hours before dropping to the ground. After the apple drops to the ground, all animals in a 5km radius will fall into a coma that will last until the apple screams again.

Dodeca

The anomaly is officially fucking weird. It's stepping into random territory and will most likely give you a headache after reading it. It is still not pure randomness, but it's getting there.

After the affected animals wake up, they will proceed to run in circles without stopping or showing any signs of exhaustion until another scream occurs, after which the animals will fall into a coma again. When the next scream occurs, the animals will wake up and all anomalous effects caused by the apple will cease.

Icosa

The anomaly is pure randomness. It is so complicated that it will require your full brain power to understand. Even after fully understanding it, you will still be left questioning yourself "How did someone come up with this?". Even the ADR Team struggles with understanding these, and that says a lot. Please make sure to make the anomaly interesting and not pure gibberish when using this class.

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. The scream has no known source. Once the apple screams, it begins levitating for about 2 hours before dropping to the ground. After the apple drops to the ground, all animals in a 5km radius will fall into a coma that will last until the apple screams again. After the affected animals wake up, they will attempt to locate and bury the apple in the ground. Once the apple is completely submerged, all anomalous effects on the affected animals will cease. Over a period of time, an apple tree will begin growing at the place where the apple was buried. When fully grown, the tree will begin producing fruit. Each fruit will resemble the fetus of an animal originally affected by the apple. As the fruit grows, the fetus will develop into a fully grown animal, which will then disconnect from the tree and begin acting like the animal it resembles. The animals grown by the tree will start producing the same scream the apple produced exactly at midnight every 24 hours. Any apples in the "Cripps Pink" cultivar exposed to the scream will develop the same anomalous properties as the original apple.

(Holy shit I genuinely feel like an insane person after writing this)

Subclasses

The optional classes to SPICE THINGS UP! Not all articles will have these; however, these classes serve as further specifications of an ADF that do not fit into Danger and/or Obscurity Class categories. An anomaly can have multiple Subclasses if required. And again, these are not required! It might be a bit hard to understand, so let's move on to the actual Subclasses.

  • These classes, and most Apple examples, were made with the help of dear ADR member MrpickyMrpicky, who basically did 90% of the work lol. BIG THANKS!

Eleutheria

The anomaly is ADR's top collection priority and is currently uncollected due to its anomalous properties. Simple as that! An anomaly that is currently trying to be collected, but for some reason can't. Most of the time, but not always, this anomaly will be in a very high Danger Class, regardless of obscurity. Also, please don't overuse this because, Istg we, the ADR Team, will lose our shit if we need to deal with 500 top-priority anomalies at the same time. Please. Don't. Overuse. Ok?

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. This scream has a 6.9% chance of exterminating all life in a certain radius. Each time it lets out a scream, the radius expands by 1km. The apple will also instantly liquify all matter within a 6.7m sphere around itself. These specific numbers don't mean anything and aren't a reference to anything. ADR is desperately trying to collect the anomaly and suppress its destructive properties.

Evorsus

The anomaly has had its anomalous properties removed or has been destroyed in some way. It is no longer considered an anomaly, but an ADF article can still be written about it, albeit in the past tense, while it still existed. If you choose to use this Subclass, make sure that the ADF tells a story about why it is no longer an anomaly! Don't just use this for the sake of having more words, ofc.

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. It was consumed, and no longer screams. It is gone. Probably shitted out by some animal or something. Reduced to atoms shit.

Vexillum

The anomaly has been standardized in humanity and is categorized as a known phenomenon. It is widely recognized and not considered a threat. Collection is not required, and it will most likely be protected under ADR's orders if it is a physical thing/lifeform. Again, there has to be a story tied to this in some way.

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. This scream can be heard throughout the entire Earth and its solar system. This is known worldwide as "The Apple's Cry" phenomenon. There is also a tradition/ritual tied to this, known as “Appology”, which most of humanity follows. Each night when The Apple's Cry is heard, followers of said ritual will look up at the sky and humbly apologize to the apple.

Aliquam

The anomaly is directly connected to the ADR Organization, or is part of its staff in some way, due to its anomalous properties. This one can be fun as it has a big range of opportunities. It can literally be a researcher who has a pocket dimension in their belly button, which can be entered by any human, and in which nothing can die. This is used as a sort of "training/testing ground" by ADR. Or, it can be an evil toilet goblin that refuses to leave an ADR office toilet, and the staff just let it live there. Endless opportunities!

Apple example: The anomaly is an apple that screams "Help me" once at midnight every 24 hours. It will then spit some cool facts about anything it chooses, all in a classy British accent. It is kept in the ADR Team's main office because those weirdos think it's funny. Well, I don't. Lazar asked me, a damn janitor, to write these examples cause the big ADR Team is on some dumb mission or something. My room is RIGHT NEXT TO THEIR OFFICE. Do you know how annoying it is to hear "HELP ME! When starfish eat, their stomachs exit their mouths to digest the food, typically clams, shells, and mussels. It then re-enters the body when they’ve finished eating! Now isn't that quaint?" and then hear their stupid giggles? Over and over again. I should ask them for earplugs or something… Yeah. Yeah, I deserve earplugs for keeping up with their bullshit. I will ask them as soon as I can.

  • Additional note from Lazar: Riccardo, why the hell didn't you say anything to us? We thought the walls were fully soundproof!!! We're all terribly sorry, and you will be provided with the best earplugs humanity can find. Mark my words, you angel of a man! And also remind me of this tomorrow because I'll probably forget.

Unknown Class

This is a rarely used class.

If, for some reason, the anomaly can not be studied enough, its Danger Class and/or Obscurity Class can be Unknown. The Unknown Class should only be used if it's absolutely necessary and required for your anomaly to make sense.
